South Africa’s Student Protests
This week a man was killed at a peaceful protest in Johannesburg. He was a bystander who got caught up in the protest before being shot several times.
I am told by a South African herself that peaceful protests in SA are often filled with singing and dancing. And yet, these people were met with guns and police violence.
Thousands of students have been left stranded with no certain education for the coming year and no future.
The government has cut funds for new and first-year students trying to attend university. These funds are for those from low-income homes, which is a considerable amount of this population and a big big issue for inequality as most of these low-income homes affect black and people of color with a high unemployment rate. How are these people supposed to become qualified for other jobs if the government won't help them step into university? The government has claimed that pulling the funds is to support the lack of funding after Covid has drawn so much from their resources, but many believe that this is just the government being corrupt. The person killed was just an innocent bystander who did not deserve to be killed.
This generation of young people has been dubbed the 'freedom generation' due to the fact that their parents grew up during apartheid. They are prepared to fight the injustice and inequality they are faced with, and they are right to do so as it is not fair.
There have been protests all week following the cut, although no significant world newspapers have featured this; therefore, we are voicing this from our small organization. We hope that it reaches you and compels you to fight for change wherever you are.
We will be sure to share updates on news and petitions; anything relevant to help with this, so please watch this space.
